Saint-Germain, Claude-Louis-Robert, count de

   political figure, general
   Born near Lons-le-Saunier, Claude-Louis-Robert, count de Saint-Germain, served with distinction as a military officer for the elector of Bavaria and the kings of Prussia, France, and Denmark. He was made secretary of war by robert turgot (1775) and reorganized the French army through a series of important reforms, including the suppression of privileged companies (musketeers and king's grenadiers) and the sale of military positions, restoration of discipline, augmentation of personnel, and a preferred placement to officer positions for the lower nobility.
